A Nairobi court has charged a man who refused to refund Sh56,100, which was erroneously sent to his MPESA account with theft.
Berdard Njue Njeru was charged with stealing the money, contrary to Section 268 of the penal code as read with Section 275 on September 11, 2022.
Njeru was arraigned at the Makadara Law Courts before Senior Principal Magistrate Mary Njagi where he pleaded guilty to the charges.
The suspect admitted to stealing the money from one Mohamed Abdullahi after erroneously receiving it and refusing to return it.
Apparently, Abdullahi erroneously transferred the money from his bank account to Njeru’s phone number.

Upon realising his mistake, Abdullahi contacted his bank’s and Safaricom customer care desks for help with the reversal of that cash.
Unfortunately, they both broke the sad news to him that the money could not be reversed since it had already been withdrawn.
As luck would have it, Abdullahi ran into Njeru, whom he knew only too well near the Eastleigh North Police Station in Nairobi.
He quickly notified the authorities who acted swiftly and nabbed Njeru.
The police recovered the phone Njeru was using when he received the money he refused to refund and kept it as an exhibit.
Njeru’s case will be heard on Tuesday.
