Traders at the Kagio fresh produce market are optimistic about the upcoming construction of an ultra-modern market facility.

This development, a joint initiative by the County and National Governments under the Economic Stimulus Programme (ESP), is aimed at addressing longstanding infrastructural challenges and fostering economic growth in the region.

Local traders have expressed their gratitude for the timely intervention.

Mary Nyawira, a seasoned potato trader, noted that the current market has become overcrowded, hindering efficient operations.

"The expansion is long overdue," she said, "and will significantly improve our working conditions."

Hannah Nyambura, a fresh produce vendor, highlighted the need for modern amenities, such as adequate sanitation facilities, reliable electricity supply, and proper drainage systems.

"These improvements will not only attract more customers but also enhance the overall market experience," she stated.

Peter Wangoci emphasized the importance of adequate parking facilities, noting that the current lack thereof often deters customers and suppliers.

"A well-designed market with ample parking space will streamline operations and boost business activity," he explained.

Calbert Njeru, the County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Trade and Industrialization, confirmed that the new market is expected to accommodate an additional 1,000 traders.

He stressed the importance of public participation in the design process to ensure the facility meets the specific needs of the local community.

Waiguru highlighted that the modern markets are designed to meet the needs of growing towns and trading centres, with features such as solid waste disposal bins, parking lots, reliable water and electricity supply, and efficient drainage systems.

Kiine Member of County Assembly (MCA) Geoffrey Murimi assured the traders that their input would be crucial in shaping the final design of the market.

"We are here to listen to your needs and ensure that the new market is a valuable asset for the Kagio community," he stated.

The plans for the new market are now progressing, with traders and local authorities working together to ensure it addresses the needs of all stakeholders and provides a lasting solution to the town's market congestion.
