The Samsung Galaxy S24 happens to be the smallest of the smartphone devices in the recently launched S24 lineup, which also includes Galaxy S24 Plus and Galaxy S24 Ultra.

Galaxy S24 is the smallest in the new lineup and comes packed with a bit of extra performance compared to its predecessor and the swankiest and smartest AI yet.

The device resembles the Galaxy S23, which was unveiled globally in 2023 as they both don a triple-lens camera setup, flat displays and the antenna markings appearing on the frame.

However, the S24 has parted ways with its predecessor with the flat edge on its frame with a matte finish making it more elegant, even as it almost resembles the iPhone 15 in design.

But due to its matte finish and Gorilla Glass Victus 2 on the front and back, the S24 looks and feels slicker but more slippery than its forerunner hence you might need a case.

The new AI-inspired Galaxy S24 smartphone device gives the user some four standard colour variations to pick from: Onyx Black, Marble Gray, Amber Yellow and Cobalt Violet.

Screen Display

The S24 also adopts an LTPO AMOLED panel to make it more power efficient with the always-on display and ensuring its refresh rate can go to as low as 1Hz when not in use.

The S24’s screen has also been upped negligibly from 6.1 inches in its predecessor to 6.2 inches with its ultimate brightness significantly enhanced from 1,750 nits to 2,600 nits.

This has greatly improved the clarity of photos and videos on the display with its adaptive 120Hz refresh rate making scrolling and transitions smoother than I had anticipated.

Optimised Efficiency

It comes equipped with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for Galaxy chip especially optimized for the Samsung Galaxy devices and ensures better efficiency and performance.

The Samsung Galaxy S24 base model is still very fast and uses the Android 14 and One UI 6.1 and comes with 8GB RAM, and either 128GB or 256GB of storage and is quite an impresser.

S24 offers a seamless experience for daily moderate to heavy tasks with no lag or heating, with Samsung guaranteeing users of the new device seven years of software upgrades.

Galaxy AI

Samsung has touted Galaxy AI as one of the best features of the S24 series lineup, with one of its key AI-powered tools including its Circle to Search feature, which allows you to tap, circle, or scribble anywhere on the screen to look up something online when in any app.

The Circle to Search is quite useful, easy and fun to use while scrolling through stuff online and you come across an interesting product and you want to find out more about them.

The Galaxy AI’s Generative Edit tool, which allows the user to remove unwanted parts from a photo, resize or straighten out images and replace them with generative AI is impressive.

Its generative AI wallpapers, real-time voice and text translation tool Live Translate, real-time voice translator Interpreter, Chat Assist and Note Assist are cool and all come in handy.

Camera Setup

Galaxy S24 camera features have remained the same as its precursor, that is, a 50MP main camera, a 10MP telephoto camera, a 12MP ultrawide camera and a 12MP selfie camera.

The colours on images taken using the S24 base model are a bit more realistic compared to those taken using previous equivalent, the S23, hence reducing the oversaturation in them.

I still feel like Samsung could have done better with the camera and the images it takes in low light as they come a bit distorted, messing a bit with up my love for night photography.

Battery Life

Samsung has upgraded the batter on the Galaxy S24 to 4,000mAh compared to its predecessor’s 3,900mAh which lasts due to the efficiency of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3.

With a single charge, the Galaxy S24 can typically lasted me an entire day with moderate use to access social media, messages, email, taking photos, reading and streaming videos.

I wish the S24 would have adopted faster charging as it only supports up to 25W charging speeds compared to 45W fast charging supported by its S24 Plus and S24 Ultra colleagues.

It is key to notes that S24 box does not come with a charging adapter but only a USB-C cable, which will leave a significant number of buyers disappointed.

In Kenya, the Galaxy S24 series base model retails at Sh174,999 (8RAM+256GB).

My Verdict

Galaxy S24 is a powerful performer, despite being the smallest of the S24 Series backed by Galaxy AI, is worth your cash if you feel it is time to upgrade from the S23 or older devices.
