Kirinyaga County is bracing for potential disaster as heavy rains continue to lash the region.

Governor Anne Waiguru has activated all emergency disaster response interventions to deal with floods and other emergencies arising from the downpour.

"This week alone, we have rescued some families displaced by floods in Mwea after river Thiba burst its banks, we have found them temporary places to stay in schools," Waiguru stated.

Dozens of people have been displaced by the floods, and schools are currently serving as shelters.

The Governor expressed concerns about the rising water levels at Thiba Dam, urging residents living nearby and in downstream areas to remain vigilant.

Fears of a potential dam breach due to the relentless rains have prompted the formation of a dedicated disaster monitoring committee.

This committee will actively track the situation, aiming to mitigate potential disasters and ensure swift response where necessary.

While heavy rains are a significant factor, Governor Waiguru highlighted human actions as another cause of flooding.

"I want to ask those blocking waterways to move away because our county is experiencing excess rains with Mwea being worst hit," she said.

Construction on riparian land and blocked drainage systems are contributing to the flooding woes.

The county government has been actively working to address these issues.

For the past two weeks, they have been clearing drainage trenches, culverts, and excavating additional trenches to improve water flow and reduce flood risks.

"The county government is committed to ensuring we save lives and property," Governor Waiguru emphasized.

"For those living in towns, let's make use of the dustbins so as to avoid dropping papers and debris that is blocking the drainage systems, so as to save more lives," she added.

The ongoing interventions have brought a sense of relief to residents in severely affected areas like Thiba, Maisha Kamili, Soweto, Thiguku, Sagana, Kagio, and areas surrounding Wang’uru Stadium.

The county has also deployed heavy machinery like excavators, backhoes, and trucks for swift response to flooding or blocked roads.

Kirinyaga County is taking a multi-pronged approach to combat the flooding, combining emergency response measures with efforts to address drainage issues and promote responsible waste disposal.

As the rains continue, Governor Waiguru's leadership and the county's proactive measures will be crucial in ensuring the safety and well-being of residents.
