SportPesa has resumed its shirt sponsorship of the Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) by signing a Sh126 million partnership deal for a periods of three years.

The new partnership agreement will finance activities by Shujaa, the Kenya National Sevens men’s team, and the Kenya National Under 20s sevens men - the Morans.

“We are pleased to be reunited with SportPesa as we seek to steer our national sevens team to even greater heights on the continental and global front, something that ties in well with SportPesa’s ambition to steer the country to greater global sporting heights,” said KRU Chairman Oduor Gangla.

He added, “As we embark on this journey with SportPesa, I would like to give an assurance of the Board’s commitment to them, and all other stakeholders, of strict adherence to corporate governance around the management of the game. We will further ensure that your interests are taken care of, and that you get tangible results from your investment.”

SportPesa CEO Ronald Karauri lauded the resumption of the sponsorship by the betting firm saying it will go a long way in supporting Kenyan rugby, which has recently been struggling financially.

“We are excited to have KRU back to our fold, a key step in ensuring that our heroes in the rugby sport get the support they need to fly the Kenyan flag high during their numerous engagements locally and internationally,” Karauri said.

“This is an incredibly important step for the Kenyan Rugby in general, the Shujaa and Morans in particular, in our strategic goal to be a rugby brand not just in Africa but globally, as we give our rich basket of rugby talent that we constantly churn out of our talent pathways a sporting chance,” said KRU CEO Aggrey Wabulwenyi.

He added, “Having understood and bought into our long-term strategic goal of not only maintaining the core status, but achieve podium finish at the World Rugby Sevens Series, and conquering the 2024 Olympics, we are delighted to have a forward-looking partner in SportPesa.”

The new pact means that the SportPesa brand is making a comeback on the front of the Shujaa and Moran shirts and will also be the official global sports gaming partner for KRU.

Sportpesa has also pledged to pay rugby players bonuses for any good performance the teams will exhibit in the various sporting events they will participate in in the future.
