Maichi cards 38 points to clinch Mitchell Cotts golf tournament at Nandi Bears

Mitchell Cotts Freight Kenya Limited on Saturday hosted the fourth annual golf tournament bringing together golfers from a total of seven counties across Kenya at Nandi Bears Club.

The game coupled with initiatives to benefit the Nandi Hills community attracted golfers from Nairobi, Kericho, Kisumu, Kakamega, Uasin Gishu, Trans-Nzoia County and Kisii Counties.

The event attracted more than 130 golfers from Nandi Bears Club (host), Nyali Golf Club, Royal Golf Club, Kericho Golf Club, Nyanza Club, Kakamega Golf Club, Kitale Club, Eldoret Club, Nakuru Golf Club, Kisii Golf Club, Kitale Golf, Club and Golf Park Nairobi.

What started as a move to appreciate Mitchell Cotts’ mainly tea producing and exporting clients supports its tea warehousing, export and auction services has grown into a one-of-a-kind event.

The golfers enjoyed the 9-hole lush green golf course set on 86 acres with those who don’t play golf demonstrating their commitment to support COP27 by planting indigenous trees.

Speaking at the tree planting ceremony, the Mitchell Cotts Group Managing Director Daniel Tanui said: “This tree planting will not only be an annual ritual for Mitchell Cotts Group, but as a company, we have today reaffirmed our commitment to preserve our environment by supporting adopt-a-tree-initiative.

Golfers and non-golfers who graced the event lauded the tournament saying it provided an avenue for socializing while making a difference in the community around Nandi Bears club.

Home captain Kimeli Mutai lauded the event saying the course was hard this weekend but the prizes available were improved from last year.

Results: 

The overall winner of the Mitchell Cotts Golf Tournament with 38 points was Abraham Maichi who beat Luke Kipchirchir to second place on countback, as Irene Brooker carded in third.

• Division 1 winners: E. Barno, S Biwott and J Siahi carded 1st, 2nd and 3rd place respectively.

• Division 2 winners: S. Miningwo, Scarlet Muhadia and V. Rugut came in 1st, 2nd and 3rd positions respectively, all with 37 points.

• Division 3 winners: H. Sembi, C. Riaroh and J Saina emerged position 1, 2, and 3 respectively.

• Lady Winner: G. Mutai.

• Staff Winner: A Mbote

• Longest Drive Men: L. Kipchirchir

• Longest Drive Lady: F. Chemutai

• Nearest to the Pin: Dr K. Mutai

• Junior Winner: Zaddock Tanui

• Best Effort: Catherine Gatua
