The president of Senegal Macky Sall has declared Monday a public holiday to celebrate the country’s African Cup of Nations’ win against Egypt over the weekend.

"The president of the republic declared Monday a public holiday, a paid day off, following the brilliant victory of the Lions," read the presidential announcement.

This is the first time Senegal’s national team has won the coveted cup after Sadio Mane led his team to prevail over Moh Salah's Egypt with a 4-2 win in the penalty shootouts at the finals in Cameroon.

President Sall had to cancel his trip to Comoros after the African Union (AU) Summit meeting in Addis Ababa and another trip to Egypt to go and welcome the national team; the Lions on their return to Dakar on Monday.

The Lions will be decorated by President Sall at the presidential palace in Dakar.

Senegal finally claimed their first Cup of Nations crown after two previous defeats in 2002 and 2019.
