During the visit, Uhuru announced cash rewards of Sh1 million for the athletes who bagged gold medals, Sh750,000 for those who took silver medals and Sh500,000 for those who brought bronze medals home.

He further announced a uniform token of Sh200,000 for all athletes and officials, including the Paralympics team taking part in the Summer Games.

Uhuru thanked the athletes for their excellent performance and for making Kenya top the African medal listing.

He challenged the sports industry to guarantee the country’s continued excellence in the global arena.

Uhuru’s gesture comes after a section of Kenyans criticized the government’s poor treatment of Kenyan Olympic athletes compared to their Ugandan counterparts.

Ugandan government rewarded their Olympic medalists with top-of-the-range cars, announced monthly grants for the athletes and promised to upgrade housing for their parents.
