Florence Migunde has been appointed as the Acting Managing Director of the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC), effective Monday.

This appointment comes in the wake of Paul Macharia’s term ending on September 19, 2024.

Prior to her new role, Migunde served as KBC’s Marketing Manager, showcasing her experience within the state-owned media organisation.

KBC Board Chairperson Tom Mshindi confirmed the appointment, expressing confidence in Migunde’s capabilities.

In a memo, he stated, “On behalf of the Board, join me in congratulating the Ag. Managing Director, Ms. Florence Migunde for the appointment as we wish her the very best in the new role.”

Mshindi also highlighted the importance of team support, urging all staff members to offer full cooperation to ensure effective service delivery during this transitional period.

While Migunde takes on this leadership role, the backdrop of her appointment raises significant questions regarding KBC's leadership structure.

Previously, Agnes Kalekye Nguna had been appointed by former ICT Cabinet Secretary Eliud Owalo as Managing Director on May 17, 2024.

However, this appointment was put on hold shortly after due to legal challenges.

A case filed by Nakuru-based surgeon Magare Gikenyi led to the High Court issuing a suspension on Kalekye’s appointment just three days later, citing procedural issues surrounding the appointments.

Justice Samwel Mohochi, presiding over the case, stated that a conservatory order was issued to suspend any documents related to the appointments.

The ruling specifically addressed Kalekye’s position along with those of three others appointed to various government roles.

As a result, the ongoing legal proceedings have left KBC without a substantive Managing Director since Naim Bilal's departure.

In this context, Migunde's appointment is a critical interim measure as the Corporation navigates these leadership challenges.

With the legal proceedings still pending, she is tasked with steering KBC through this transitional phase while awaiting a definitive resolution regarding the previous appointments
