Zipline has achieved a significant milestone by completing its inaugural drone delivery to the newly opened St. Joseph's Nyabondo Mission Hospital, an initiative set to revolutionise the delivery of critical medical supplies in the region.
The event, which took place during the hospital's official opening, was attended by William Ruto, President of Kenya, underscoring the importance of this technological advancement in healthcare.
The drone delivery, which occurred live during the hospital’s launch, exemplified how Zipline’s technology can overcome logistical hurdles, especially in areas where geographical challenges often delay the arrival of essential medical supplies.
This demonstration marked a new era in healthcare accessibility and efficiency for the region.
Dr. Ganda Gregory, Minister for Health for the County Government of Kisumu, highlighted the impact of Zipline’s operations over the past 18 months.

"Over the one and a half years since our partnership with Zipline, they have completed over 10,000 flights to Kisumu County facilities, with approximately 40 per cent of these delivering emergency supplies," he noted.
"This partnership has significantly improved the response time of health facilities and overall increased patient outcomes."
Zipline’s autonomous drones, designed to deliver vital medical supplies to remote areas, are changing the landscape of healthcare delivery in Nyabondo.
Traditionally, these supplies—such as blood, vaccines, and medications—would take hours to reach remote facilities due to difficult roads and unpredictable weather.
Now, with drone technology, delivery times are reduced to mere minutes, a development expected to greatly improve patient outcomes in emergency situations.
Dr. Kizra Syed, Head of Digital Health Transformation for Kisumu County, described the challenges that the region’s healthcare providers faced before Zipline's intervention.
"A lot of our facilities were cut off by floods during the heavy rainy season, making the delivery of emergency supplies extremely challenging. Zipline's drone delivery service has been a game-changer, allowing us to reach even the furthest facilities in under 10 minutes. For us, Zipline is a blessing in disguise," she said.
The collaboration between St. Joseph's Nyabondo Mission Hospital and Zipline aligns with broader efforts to enhance emergency response and healthcare delivery in underserved areas.
Zipline’s drone technology, already successful in countries such as Rwanda, Ghana, and the United States, has proven to be a critical asset in reducing delivery times and improving patient care.
Sarah Gatuka, Zipline Kenya's Government Affairs Manager, underscored the significance of this partnership.
"Our mission is to ensure that no one is left behind when it comes to accessing life-saving medical supplies.
