Transport CS Kipchumba Murkomen spearheaded a critical move towards enhancing road safety by unveiling two essential tools aimed at reducing fatalities and injuries during the festive season.
The launch, a crucial component of the National Usalama Barabarani Campaign, introduced the freely distributed Kenya Highway Code and Learner Drivers’ Handbook.
"I urge all drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians to familiarise themselves with the rules and be ambassadors of road safety while using the roads," emphasized Murkomen.
According to Murkomen, over the past year, concerted efforts yielded a commendable 8.11 per cent decrease in road traffic fatalities from January 1st to December 7th, 2023, compared to the same period last year, down from 4,352 to 3,999.
Despite this progress, Murkomen acknowledged that there is more work to be done.

The reduction in deaths was coupled with a troubling increase in seriously injured individuals, particularly among pedal cyclists.
Murkomen attributed this rise to factors such as speeding, dangerous cycling, and inadequate non-motorised transport facilities.
"I am disheartened to report a rise in fatalities among pedal cyclists...I implore each citizen to take personal responsibility and minimize the factors that contribute to risky road behavior," Murkomen stated.
Highlighting the preventive nature of safety rules, Murkomen stressed the importance of personal responsibility in curbing road incidents, as approximately 90 per cent of accidents result from unsafe road user behaviour.
The Transport CS urged vehicle operators to carry functional first aid kits and fire extinguishers and embrace basic first aid training.
He called on citizens to support the government's efforts to maintain order on the roads, especially during the festive season.
As part of the commitment to road safety, the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), in collaboration with the National Police Service, will intensify enforcement activities during the festive season, focusing on illegal Public Service Vehicles (PSVs).
"I urge everyone to plan journeys and avoid overloading, speeding, and drunk driving. May this festive season be a joyous and safe one, filled with responsible choices," Murkomen concluded.
The National Usalama Barabarani Campaign, launched in partnership with various organizations, including the Kenya Urban Roads Authority, Kenya National Highways Authority, and Safaricom, marks a concerted effort to enhance road safety awareness and reduce incidents on Kenyan roads.
