The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has compelled Airbnb Ireland UC (Airbnb) to furnish a limited dataset encompassing historical transactions that transpired on the Airbnb platform within the timeframe of 1 January 2021 to 31 December 2022.

This dataset is set to include information regarding hosts and particulars of their earnings on Airbnb.

In response to this mandate, Airbnb Ireland UC, an Irish registered company serving as the data controller for all Airbnb users in Kenya, acknowledges the request and its legal obligation to share this information.

The KRA's request emanated via an exchange of information inquiry directed to the Irish Tax Authority, also known as the Irish Revenue, which subsequently formalized the request to Airbnb.

"We have been required by the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) to provide a limited amount of data about historical transactions that took place on the Airbnb platform during the period from 1 January 2021 to 31 December 2022 to them," stated Airbnb, confirming their compliance with the tax authority's request.

Irish Revenue is now poised to inform each Kenyan Airbnb user whose data is part of this exchange of information request about the impending sharing of their data with the KRA.

This initiative by Airbnb serves as a testament to its commitment to adhering to legal obligations and ensuring transparency in taxation matters.

"We are legally obliged to do so," affirms Airbnb, emphasizing their commitment to abiding by the legal framework and fulfilling their role as a data controller.

The collaborative effort between Airbnb, Irish Revenue, and the Kenya Revenue Authority aims to bolster tax compliance and transparency within the platform's ecosystem, fostering greater accountability among hosts in Kenya.
