The first vice president of Zanzibar Maalim Seif Sharif Hamad died Wednesday weeks after he tested positive for Covid-19.

Hamad passed away at Muhimbili National Hospital in Dar es Salaam in Tanzania where he was being treated.

He was hospitalised on January 29 after his party announced that he had tested positive for Coronavirus together with his wife and aides.

Hamad's death comes after Presiden John Magufuli warned his Health Ministry officias against accepting Covid-19 vaccines  developed by Western scientists.

Seif, who died at the age of 77, was popular for his charisma and oratory skills and the Tanzanian Head of State has declared 7 days of national mourning.

President Uhuru Kenyatta, through the official State House Kenya twitter handle, has sent a message of condolence to Hamad's family, Zanzibari President Dr Hussein Mwinyi and the people of Zanzibar.
