Azimio la Umoja party leader Raila Odinga on Monday ignored the warning by Police Inspector General Japhet Koome outlawing demos to lead protests in city estates.

Raila emerged minutes past 1pm to lead the anti-government demos to the excitement of his supporters in Kawangware who thronged his vehicle demanding that he addresses them.

However, his supporters scampered for safety after police lobbed teargas canisters to disperse them resulting in a confrontation after Raila left one of his numerous stops.

There was more drama as police lobbed more teargas towards Raila’s motorcade sending supporters scurrying for safety but they later gathered and continued with the protests.

In his brief stops, Raila has vowed to continue with the demos until the government reduces the cost of living, opens IEBC servers and reconstitutes the IEBC Selection Panel.

In the Monday demos, Raila was carried in a different SUV from the one he usually uses and was forced to address the public from the open back door instead of the usual sunroof position.  


Raila was flanked in his Kawangware and Kibra protest visits by Kalonzo Musyoka, Martha Karua, Eugene Wamalwa, George Wajackoyah, Wycliffe Oparanya and Jeremiah Kioni among others.

“The cost of living must come down, the prices of unga, fuel, rent, school fees must come down. The servers (IEBC) must also be opened.

After Kawangware, Raila's motorcade headed to Kibra after being thwarted from heading to the Nairobi CBD via Ngong Road, where he lambasted the government over the unabated invasion of Kenyatta family's Northlands City land and his East Africa Spectre Limited.    


In almost every stop, his convoy and supporters were teargassed by police to disperse and bar them from heading towards the CBD with running battles between police and protesters characterising Raila's many stops in Kibra.  

This comes a day after Police IG Japhet Koome declared the anti-government protests illegal and vowing to deal decisively with anyone found taking part in the Raila-led Azimio protests.
