Five people lost their lives and several others sustained serious injuries in a Thursday morning accident that occurred near Kikopey Trading Centre along the Nairobi-Nakuru highway.

The National Police Service confirmed the incident, which claimed the lives of four adults and one child and injured several others seriously.

According to the police report, the accident happened after two 14-seater public service vehicles rammed into a stationary truck that had stalled earlier.

“Our preliminary investigations indicate that two matatus belonging to Nairobi and Mololine Bus Companies rammed onto a lorry that was stalled along the climbing lane facing towards Nairobi direction,” the police said.

“As a result of the impact, five people (4 adults and 1 child) lost their lives, while several others were injured.”

The police also confirmed that they have launched an extensive investigation into the accident and expressed their condolences to the grief-stricken families.

NPS urged motorists and all other road users to adhere to traffic rules, avoid reckless driving and avoid driving under the influence of alcohol.

“We appeal to motorists and all road users to adhere to traffic rules by driving within the legal speed limits, refraining from driving under influence of alcohol and any other form of recklessness on the road," the NPS said.

This is yet another accident involving Public Service Vehicles, and a stalled lorry both of which are responsible for road carnage in the country.
