A Nairobi court has released Kenya’s World Rally Championship driver Maxine Wahome on a Sh100,000 cash bail after spending two nights in police custody.
Wahome was arrested and taken into police custody for allegedly assaulting her boyfriend.
She was accused of viciously assaulting Asad Khan alias Kalulu and causing his grievous harm on Monday at an apartment in Kilimani, Nairobi.
Investigating officer Kibei had initially asked the court to allow them to detain Wahome for a fortnight, citing the fact that Asad was unconscious and in critical condition at Avenue Hospital and therefore cannot give a satisfactory account.
He also said the release of Wahome who is a flight risk could lead to interference with the investigations since she had not disclosed her fixed address.

“The continued detention of the respondent is immensely necessary for the furtherance and finalizing of the investigations, her release could further lead to interference with the investigations and a flight risk as has not disclosed her fixed abode,” Kibei said.
However, Milimani Senior Principal Magistrate Bernard Ochoi declined the request and said there were no compelling reasons to detain Wahome in police custody.
Instead, Ochoi ordered Wahome to report to the investigating officer at Kilimani Police Station on Thursdays until the probe into the case was concluded.
According to the police report, Asad’s brother Adila Khan reported the incident at Kilimani Police Station after Wahome allegedly assaulted his brother.
Police rushed to the scene only to find that Asah had already been rushed to Nairobi Hospital where he was admitted to the HDU with a serious wound in his ankle.
The matter was reported to the police by Asad’s brother Adila and they visited the scene but did not find Asad as he had already been rushed to Nairobi Hospital.
The police said they found Wahome at the scene and she appeared disturbed and household items littered the floor and staircase.
“The scene was documented where forensic evidence with bloodstains and other items were collected and the respondent was escorted to Kilimani Police Station where she was booked for the offence of grievous harm,” the police report said.
Asad who is also a rally driver seemed to have lost a lot of blood from the incident because his family had made a public appeal for blood donations.
“We, the family of Asad Khan (Kalulu) hereby wish to express our utmost gratitude to all those who came forward to donate blood for Asad Kalulu. He remains in a serious critical condition and is fighting for his life,” read the statement.
“At this point, we wish to request all friends and well-wishers to kindly keep him in your prayers. The hospital team at Avenue hospital ICU require 5 pints of blood group A+ or O+ for his ongoing treatment.”
The 26-year-old Wahome made news in June 2022 when she became the first Kenyan female driver to win the World Rally Championship-3(WRC3).
