Uasin Gishu County chiefs came under fire from County Commissioner Edison Nyale following the dismal turnout at the Kapsoya Secondary School grounds for the Monday Jamhuri Day Celebrations.
In a video that has since gone viral, the furious commissioner threatened to sack chiefs over the low turnout while he was addressing the small crowd that had gathered on the grounds.
Nyale said the low turnout was a sign that the people do not have faith in their chiefs anymore.
He asked the chiefs if they were no longer able to perform their duties.
“Chiefs, have you become unable to work? What are these? It means people no longer have faith in you so when you tell them to show up for events like this, where very senior people like the county commissioner and the governor, who is coming to listen to their needs, they cannot come,” Nyale said.

“If the two of us and all of you will sit here and address the seats as it is then we will no longer bother,” he said.
“So responsibility…do you want us to take action on all those caps you are wearing today?”
“We do not want to witness such, very low turnup from the members of the public, in Uasin Gishu, the county of His Excellency the President as you are now…what kind of embarrassment is this?” he posed.
Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Bii also who attended the ceremony also echoed the county commissioner’s sentiments.
However, Bii did not level any accusations against the chiefs but noted there were some individuals out to sabotage his government.
“I hear you on the issue of low turnout, but I do not want to blame the chiefs for it. I have been told that some people are sabotaging my government, and I do not know yet who they are and if you are among the suspects,” Bii said.
The governor appealed to the chiefs to respect national holidays while reminiscing about the old days when such holidays were revered.
“Mr County Commissioner, I felt for you when you realised there were no people and I am not saying they (the chiefs) caused it. I am only asking ‘what happened, actually?’ I have been told that some people are sabotaging my government, and I do not know yet who they are and if you are among the suspects,” Bii said.
“All I want to say is, in future, if God wills, matters of national holidays like this one should be accorded the importance they deserve.”
