Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko is a happy man after the Mombasa High Court ordered the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to clear him to run for the Mombasa gubernatorial seat.

The three-judge bench led comprising Olga Sewe, Stephen Githinji, and Ann Ong'injo ruled that Sonko presented all the required documents before the electoral body.

The judges also noted that Sonko has a pending appeal in the Supreme court and is yet to exhaust his options for contesting his impeachment case.

Sonko has been in and out of the court to contest petitions that sought to bar him from contesting in the Mombasa gubernatorial race on grounds that the Nairobi County Assembly impeached him from office.

IEBC and its Dispute Resolution Committee (DRC) put up a spirited legal fight against Sonko's legal team to prove that Sonko is not fit to run in any elective position.

Sonko's legal team in their argument said the IEBC and DRC erred in disqualifying him from running for the Mombasa governor's seat and prayed the court to grant Sonko his request which would allow him to vie.
