Joseph Kimani Njuguna has filed a petition seeking to block Nakuru Senator Susan Kihika from the Nakuru gubernatorial race.


In his petition to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) chair Wafula Chibukati, Njuguna wants Kihika barred from contesting in the race because she is not a Kenyan citizen.

Njuguna claims Kihika renounced her Kenyan citizenship in 2003 and acquired US citizenship.

“Having lost her Kenya citizenship, the said Susan Wakahura Kihika was required under section 10 of the Citizenship and Immigration Act Cap 172 of the laws of Kenya to apply in the prescribed manner in order to regain citizenship of Kenya,” the petition read.

Njuguna cited Section 8(4) of the Citizenship and Immigration Act which makes it an offence for a duo citizen who fails to disclose his/her other citizenship in the prescribed manner.

Njuguna argued the senator contravenes the Constitution by running for the Nakuru gubernatorial seat.


It is on such grounds that Njuguna requested Kihika to be stopped from contesting in the August election.

“I therefore request that the said Susan Wakahura Kihika be barred from contesting the upcoming general election of the August 2022 in the position of Governor Nakuru County,” Njuguna said.
