The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has launched investigations into the deaths and four people and injuries to others during a police shooting incident at Masimba in Kajiado County on Thursday.

This comes after police officers are said to have opened fire on members of the public who were picketing at Masimba and fatally wounding the four unfortunate individuals while leaving the others with serious injuries.

“The Independent Policing Oversight Authority yesterday learnt of the deaths of four people and injury to others when the Police allegedly opened fire on demonstrating members of the public in Kajiado County,” IPOA said.

A statement issued on Friday by IPOA chairperson Ann Makori said Section 7 of the IPOA Act which dictates that deaths and injuries occasioned by actions of the police be investigated by the Authority informs the investigation.

IPOA has dispatched a team to the scene to gather all relevant information to be used in the probe.

“In line with the provisions of the IPOA Act Section 7 (a)(x), which dictates that deaths and injuries occasioned by actions of the police be investigated by the Authority, and Section 5 of the Sixth Schedule of the National Police Service Act which compels the police to report all deaths, serious injury and other grave consequences to the Authority for investigations, a Rapid Response Team was this morning 3rd June 2022 dispatched with instructions to obtain all information that may be relevant in unveiling the circumstances surrounding the incident,” the statement read.

IPOA said it will make recommendations not limited to prosecution once the investigations are complete.

“On completion of the investigations, where fault is found, the Authority shall make recommendations, including but not limited to prosecution,” IPOA said.

Residents of Masimba barricaded roads protesting the death of a teacher who was killed by an elephant.

They demand to be addressed by officers from the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS).

Three people died on the spot following while one died while receiving treatment at Makindu Sub-County Hospital where he was rushed.

Among the people who were rushed to the health facility in critical condition is a Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) officer based at the Kawaha Barracks.
