Kenyans are poised to enjoy one of the longest weekends in recent times after Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i on Tuesday officially gazette two public holidays.
The two holidays essentially mean Kenyans will enjoy a five-day long weekend.
In the Kenya Gazette notice, Matiang'i declared Friday a public holiday giving all Kenyans a chance to mourn Kenya’s third president Mwai Kibaki who died last week Thursday.
"IN EXERCISE of the powers conferred by section 3 of the Public Holidays Act, the Cabinet Secretary for Interior and Co-ordination of National Government declares Friday, the 29th April, 2022, to be a public holiday throughout the Republic in order to accord all Kenyans the opportunity to participate in the State Funeral Service in honour of the life of the late H.E. Mwai Kibaki, the Third President of the Republic of Kenya," the notice read.

Kenyans will also celebrate Labour Day on Sunday, May 1, 2022, meaning it will extend to Monday given it falls on a weekend.
On conclusion of the extended Labour Day, the CS also declared Tuesday a public holiday to mark Idd-ul-Fitr, the end of the holy fasting month of Ramadhan in the Muslim calendar.
"IT IS notified for the general information of the public that the Cabinet Secretary for Interior and Co-ordination of National Government, in exercise of the powers conferred by section 2 (1) of the Public Holidays Act, declares that Tuesday, the 3rd May, 2022, shall be a public holiday to mark Idd-ul-Fitr," Matiang'i announced.
The following is the list of public holidays which will accord all Kenyans a five-day weekend that ends on Wednesday next week:
• Friday - Public Holiday ahead of Mwai Kibaki burial
• Monday - Labor Day public Holiday
• Tuesday - Eid Ul Fitr public holiday
