The chair of the Independent and Electoral Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Wafula Chebukati has expressed his concerns that the commission may not meet its targets in the second round of the enhanced voter registration exercise that ends in five days.
Chebukati was speaking in Garissa where he was on an inspection tour of the ongoing voter registration exercise.
The IEBC chair disclosed that only 500,000 eligible voters have been registered countrywide and the number increased only during the previous week.
Chebukati encouraged Kenyans to come out and register as voters so that they can vote for their preferred leaders in the August general elections.
“Mine is to appeal to Kenyans across the country to please take advantage of this last week and register so that you can be able to elect leaders of your choice,” Chebukati said.

He assured Kenyans the commission is ready to serve them anytime they wish to be registered as there was still enough time to do the same.
“It’s not too late, we still have one week. If Kenyans can come out in their numbers, we shall be able to serve them. Let us be hopeful,” the IEBC chair said.
However, Chebukati ruled out any possibilities of extension of the voter registration exercise.
Chebukati lauded Garissa County for registering the highest numbers in the second phase of the voter registration exercise, leading all the other counties with 8,736 against the target of 24,000 people.
“I want to confirm it here that Garissa is doing very well as against other counties,” Chebukati said.
This is the second and last round of the enhanced voter registration exercise ahead of the August general elections.
The exercise began on January 17 and will end on Sunday.
