Police have arrested two individuals in Njoro, Nakuru County in connection to mobile phone fraud.

The two individuals; Sabina Evelyne Nyanumba, a student at Egerton University and his accomplice Paul Nyabero Kilenya were arrested over the weekend.

They are suspected of defrauding a Kiambu couple of Sh716,000 through a mobile phone scam.

Reports show that in June, they called a woman pretending to be Safaricom customer care representatives and managed to retrieve her personal information and her husband’s.

Sabina and Paul used that information to clean the victim’s MPESA account and Cooperative Bank accounts from where they mined Sh296,652 in total.

Likewise, they further withdrew Sh420,570 from the woman’s husband’ MPESA account and Cooperative bank accounts.

Kiambu-based Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau detectives, in conjunction with DCI and Safaricom, conducted a thorough forensic data analysis that led to the arrest of the two suspects.

Police recovered the handsets they used to defraud their unsuspecting victims.

They will be arraigned in Kiambu Law Courts on Monday.
