Former Kenya Prisons Service Commissioner General Isaya Osugo Mosiori has died at the age of 67.

Osugo passed away on Monday night while receiving treatment at the Nairobi Hospital, where he had been admitted in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for more than one week.

Kenya Prisons Service has confirmed the death of its former boss and shared its message of condolence with the family of the deceased.

“The Kenya Prisons Service has learnt with profound shock & sadness the news of the demise of the retired Commissioner General of Prisons Mr. Isaya M.Osugo, EBS Which happened last night while undergoing treatment at Nairobi Hospital,” Kenya Prisons tweeted on Tuesday.

It added, “Kenya Prisons Service conveys our deepest sympathies and heartfelt condolences to the family, relatives and friends. May the Almighty God grant them strength and great fortitude to bear the loss of their Loved one.”

The former prisons boss is said to have been battling cancer for the past two years and had even been flown to India to seek specialised treatment but his condition did not improve.

Osugo, who retired as Prisons Commissioner General in 2019, is credited with spearheading key reforms in the penal institutions and giving them a more humane face.

Osugo was picked by late former President Mwai Kibaki from the National Police Service, where he served as the Nairobi Provincial Criminal Investigations Officer, to take over stewardship of the prisons in 2008.
