Kilimani Police Station-based police have arrested a woman they say is a police imposter who appeared for an interview on a local vernacular television station.

Kilimani OCPD Andrew Mbogo confirmed the woman's arrest saying they have already launched an investigation into the matter.

The woman was identified as Monica Wamaitha Gitau, a civilian who is also a candidate for the Nairobi Woman Representative seat in the August 9 general election.

According to the National Police Service (NPS), they received information about the interview and the woman posing as a police officer and dressed in the full police uniform.

“Police officers based at Kilimani Police Station today received information of an ongoing interview at Inooro TV hosting an alleged uniformed female police officer as a panellist,” NPS said.

“Doubting the credibility of the interviewee, police officers rushed to the TV station from where they arrested Monica Wamaitha Gitau, a civilian and an aspirant for the Nairobi Women MP seat in full police uniform.”

According to Mbogo, Wamaitha claimed to be a retired Administration police Officer which she says was an offence.

"We are investigating why she was wearing the uniform and probably by tomorrow morning we shall give a full report. We will reveal the law she breached by then. She is purported to have retired from the Administration Police Service in 2011. What she did is an offence," Mbogo said

Wamaitha is currently in police custody, assisting the police with their investigations.

The NPS has advised all media houses to liaise with the office of the Police Spokesperson Bruno Shioso or respective county commanders for clearance ahead of all interviews with police officers.

“To avoid similar incidences in the future, National Police Service wishes to advise all Media Houses to always liaise for clearance with the Office of the Police Spokesperson or respective regional or county commanders over all requests for interviews with police officers,” NPS said.

Wamaitha is vying for the Nairobi Woman Representative seat on an Usawa Party ticket.
