Two students from Kisii High School are in police custody following an impromptu search that unearthed bhang from items belonging to them.

The institution had ordered an impromptu search that enlisted the services of canine officers to weed out illegal items on the fateful school’s opening day on Tuesday.

One student had fitted 10 rolls of bhang in a medicine wrapper while the other one repackaged the bhang in used tea bags.

The police sniffer dogs that are specially trained to detect narcotics easily sniffed out the illegal substances from the students’ possessions, rendering the students speechless.

The rigorous search exercise mounted by the school's administration was likely informed by the meeting headteachers attended in Mombasa last week that noted one of the major causes of wayward tendencies in school is drug abuse.

Kisii High School principal Fred Mogaka said the institution will intensify the process and has introduced a check-in system to allow parents to know what time their children report to school.

"We want to say that this is the way to go. Even as they will be coming, we will continue doing this and we also have a clocking in system. This will allow parents to check what time the young men are arriving at school," Mogaka said.

Some parents who witnessed the incident commended the institution and expressed their contentment with the safety of their children.

One such parent said affirmed his support for the move and said if it was the only way to curb drug abuse in institutions then the school should carry on.

The two students will be arraigned in court.
