The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has warned students against crime while in school, saying their acts will be captured when they will apply for Certificate of Good Conduct.

The warning by the George Kinoti-led DCI comes amid rising cases of arson in schools in various parts of the country that have resulted in destruction of property worth millions of shillings.

“This is to warn every student that the DCI is archiving and consolidating charges that may be preferred to each and every student involved in any crime,” the warning read.

It went on, “Let each student be informed that it will automatically be reflected on the police clearance certificate commonly referred to as Certificate of Good Conduct.”

The crimes listed by DCI included armed and unpeaceful demonstrations, arson, drugs, cyberbullying, assault of any degree, drunkenness or any other reported crime.

This comes following the closure of Koelel High School in Gilgil, Kimulot Secondary in Bomet, as well as Bungoma’s Chesamisi Boys and St Luke’s Kimilili Boys after students went on rampage.

Separately, a dormitory was torched at Kisumu Boys and Kiambere Secondary schools with police launching investigations with the wave of attacks taking education ministry officials back to the drawing board on how to ensure safety of students in schools.

Learning resumed in schools across Kenya on January 4 after closure for nine months in measures initiated by the government after the first Covid-19 case was reported in march 2020.
