In a significant move coinciding with the United Nations’ World Environment Day, Tetra Pak has unveiled its 25th Sustainability Report, outlining the progress made in its ambitious sustainability agenda.

This report highlights achievements in five crucial areas: food systems, circularity, climate, nature, and social sustainability.

The Sustainability Report FY23, released on 5 June, details notable advancements including a 20 per cent reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions across the value chain and a 47 per cent reduction in GHG emissions within Tetra Pak’s own operations since 2019.

These efforts place the company on a solid path toward achieving net-zero GHG emissions in its operations by 2030, with a broader goal of reaching net-zero across the entire value chain by 2050.

A key highlight from the past year is the introduction of an aseptic beverage carton featuring a paper-based barrier, significantly lowering its carbon footprint by 33 per cent.

This innovation marks a step forward in Tetra Pak’s goal to create the world's most sustainable food packaging, supported by a €100 million annual investment in packaging research and development for the next five to ten years.

The President & CEO of Tetra Pak  Adolfo Orive emphasised the importance of industry-wide collaboration, stating, “Collaboration across the food industry is ever more important to feed a growing population sustainably. Our global presence and end-to-end solutions give us opportunities every day to collaborate with stakeholders across the value chain, from farmers and food producers, to suppliers, policymakers, consumers and others. We understand the responsibility that comes with this role. We remain committed to playing our part to transform the world’s food systems, to ensure they are more secure, resilient and sustainable.”

The report also underscores several other significant achievements and ongoing initiatives aimed at protecting food, people, and the planet.

Among these are:

Expanding School Feeding Programmes: Tetra Pak facilitated access to milk and other nutritious beverages for 64 million children in 49 countries through its School Feeding Programmes.

Accelerating Recycling Efforts: The amount of carton packages collected and recycled globally increased by 7 per cent compared to 2022. Additionally, there was a 14 per cent rise in the volume of polyAl sent for recycling.

Recognition for Leadership in Corporate Transparency and Performance: For the eighth year running, Tetra Pak was included in the CDP Forests ‘A List’ and received an ‘A-‘ rating in Water Security in its first year of reporting.

Commitment to Human Rights: The company actively implemented the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights.

These initiatives demonstrate Tetra Pak’s ongoing commitment to sustainability and its proactive role in driving positive environmental and social impacts globally.
