The OPPO Reno series has always entrenched portrait photography and videography since it was first unveiled globally in 2019 and the recently launched Reno8 continues to push the limit for the user.

The new Reno8 device dubbed “Portrait Expert”, comes fitted with the Dual Sony Flagship Sensors; a new generation IMX709 RGBW on the front camera, and an IMX766 sensor on the main camera.

The Chinese mobile manufacturer says it was motivated by the positive feedback it received from Reno users across the globe to continue developing imaging technology to improve the Reno Series further.

On discovering that 40 per cent of photos and close to 50 per cent of videos shot on Reno smartphones are taken after 5pm, OPPO upgraded the Reno8 portrait capabilities for more enhanced imaging power.

Imaging Power

OPPO unveiled the innovative Quadra Binning Algorithm, which helps each sensor to capture 60 per cent more light and reduce image noise by 35 per cent as compared to a traditional RGGB setup.

This has enabled the new phone to capture brighter and more vivid images without losing the color accuracy in environments with low light.

For the algorithm to be functional on the Reno8 series, OPPO has partnered with Sony to have the flagship Sony IMX766 50MP on its main camera and IMX709 RGBW on the front 32MP camera.

The upgrade of both the front and back camera on the OPPO Reno8 series is what the smartphone manufacturer says enables the users to become “Portrait Experts”.

The OPPO Reno8 5G also boasts of a flagship Sony IMX766 50MP sensor on its main camera, which features a 1/1.56-inch sensor size and 1μm pixels that can be doubled to 2μm using OPPO’s Quadra Binning algorithm, which allows intake of more light for clearer photos.

To resolve issued with low light, OPPO has incorporated the DOL-HDR technology into both the front IMX709 sensor and the rear IMX766 sensor in the Reno8 series devices launched in Kenya last week.

This is different from the traditional HDR processes as it takes short and long exposure photos almost simultaneously then synthesizes them into a single frame image to balance brightness and shadows.

Powerful Portrait

The new Reno8 series enable users to capture stunning portrait videos in virtually any situation due to its flagship sensors on the front and back of the phone, alongside a suite of AI-based portrait features.

Ultra-Night Video

The Ultra Night Video algorithm on the Reno8 5G detects ambient light and automatically improves image brightness, color expression and sharpens facial features to bring out the beauty in every image.

This feature which is enhanced by AI delivers clearer, brighter, and more vivid portrait videos on both the front and rear cameras, whether one is shooting at night or in a dimly lit surrounding.

Ultra HDR Video

To enable Ultra HDR Video on the Reno8 5G, OPPO developed the DOL-HDR to enable the device to detect high dynamic range of scenes that automatically toggle Ultra HDR Video to process each video frame with enhanced dynamic range and true-to-life colors guaranteeing brighter and clearer images.

Night Portrait

OPPO has incorporated two extra features into the Reno8 device that enhances its night portrait capability by up to 39.7 per cent as compared to the previous Reno7 series.

The industry-leading Turbo RAW algorithm reduces noise in all three R/G/B channels using an AI neural network, this added to the significant increase in light sensitivity of the dual flagship camera sensors.

Natural Portraits

The new Reno8 series enable the user to capture realistic portrait photos in a variety of situations.

AI Portrait Retouching uses 193 facial recognition points to identify facial features and remove imperfections such as pimples, acne scars, and sunspots, while intelligently retouching skin tones and makeup without any artificial or excessive brightening.

The beautifying filter giving users the confidence to keep shining and bring out their personality based on OPPO’s research on the skin tone and beauty preferences of thousands of users around the world.

The new OPPO Reno8 5G comes packed with incredible camera features and takes the Reno Series to a new level of portrait performance based on OPPO’s mission as the "Portrait Expert" enabler for users.

“As R&D into imaging technology advances, OPPO will continue to bring even more professional portrait photography and videography features to Reno series users around the world,” said OPPO Kenya PR Manager Fredrique Achieng.
