Safaricom has announced a Sh6.2 million sponsorship for the Magical Kenya Open (MKO) as it joined the prestigious international golf tournament as its official technology partner.

In the arrangement, Safaricom will provide internet connectivity by providing a Cell on Wheels (COW) at the venue to support the global streaming of the event.

As the technology partner, the Kenyan telecommunications company will also provide scoring devices and airtime for communication support during the entire golf event.

“Our continued partnership with Magical Kenya Open has enabled us to support the game for the last nine years,” said Safaricom CEO Peter Ndegwa.

Ndegwa added: “As a purpose-led organisation, we remain committed to supporting sports because it is transforming the lives of millions of Kenyans.”

MKO has been scheduled for February 22-25 2024 and seeks to promote national development through fostering sports tourism, talent as well as enterprise.

This year’s golf tournament, which is ongoing at Muthaiga Golf Club in Nairobi, will also feature Golf for Disabled (G4D).

“Safaricom has enabled us to ensure this event is viewed on the global stage by providing reliable internet connectivity, thereby boosting the live streaming of the event to international and local fans,” said Magical Kenya Open Tournament Director Patrick Obath.

Obath added, “This is made possible by Safaricom’s support, so we urge everyone to tune in wherever you are.”

Safaricom also sponsored the Magical Kenya Ladies Open golf tournament held earlier in February 2024 Vipingo Ridge where Shannon Tan became the first player from Singapore to win a Ladies European Tour at the tourney.
