Kisumu County’s Obunga FC and Plateau Queens have been declared the 2023 Safaricom Chapa Dimba Nyanza region finals champions.

Obunga FC emerged the new champion of the Nyanza regional finals after walking over Awendo Academy from Migori County 2-1 in a heated clash at Moi Stadium in Kisumu.

A penalty kicked in by Tyson Muluri after a foul on Duncan Omalla in the box saw Obunga FC take the lead in the 45th minute with Clain Masaba making it 2-0 only two minutes later.

Awendo’s sole goal was scored by Elvis Odhiambo in the 92nd minute.

“It wasn't an easy game, considering that Awendo Academy is a formidable team. There were high expectations from our fans, but I am thrilled that my boys have lived up to those expectations, especially given that this is our first participation in the Chapa Dimba tournament, and we've managed to clinch the regional trophy,” said Obunga FC coach Amos Ochieng.

Plateau Queens beat Victoria Sports Academy 4-3 in a penalty shootout after the game ended in a 1-1 draw in regular time to bag their second regional Chapa Dimba title.

Plateau Queens, who are the inaugural Chapa Dimba champions in the Girls' Category, were the first to shake the back of the net in the 12th minute through midfielder Velma Atieno.

Sheila Awuor equalized for Victoria in the 24th minute resulting in the penalty shootout.

Obunga FC and Plateau Queens reached the reginal finals after beating their unrelenting football rivals, Nyaguku FC from Nyamira 4-0, and Kisii Queens 2-1, respectively.

On their parts, Awendo Academy and Victoria Sports Academy reached the finals after trouncing St Peter’s Wagai 3-1 and Ageng’a Girls 1-0 respectively in the semis on Saturday.

Obunga FC and Plateau Queens each took home Sh250,000 and will represent the Western region in the National finals scheduled for early 2024.

The Chapa Dimba Nyanza Regional Finals runners-up, Awendo Academy and Victoria Sports Academy, each took home Sh150,000.

Safaricom Chapa Dimba Nyanza region featured a total of 530 teams, including 412 Boys’ teams and 118 Girls’ teams, that took part in the tournament from the Ward levels.
