Kenyan national rugby legend Collins Injera has retired after an illustrious career spanning more than two decades.

Injera announced his retirement from rugby through a post on social media on Tuesday, saying he opted to hang his expensive boots after listening to his body for many months.

The rugby player, who was born on born October 18, 1986, says he is convinced that it is time for him to exit the rugby stage after pondering over the matter for some time.

“Everything must come to an end, sometime. I have always said that I will know it’s time because my body will tell me. And for the past few months, it has really ‘spoken’ to me so, finally, I have decided to listen to it,” a statement released by Injera read in part.

It went on, “As hard as this is for me, after 17 years of literal blood, sweat and tears, it’s time to step away from this great game that has given me so much more than I could ever ask for.”

Injera, who holds the second place for number of tries scored on the World Rugby Sevens Series with 271, thanked all those who have supported him throughout his illustrious career.

The Olympian also lauded his wife and children who he said had been there for him through his long and illustrious career.

“To my wife Chebet and my kids; Chloe, Clyde, and Carl, thank you very much for all the love, support and understanding you have given me all these years. Those days, weeks, and sometimes months that you have endured without my presence as I was busy chasing my dream across the globe are finally over,” he added in the statement.

The National Rugby Sevens great says he will take up a key position with the Avanti Communications, a satellite operator based in the UK, to support its East African operations.

“To the fans, media and sponsors, thank you all for the support throughout my career. I hope I made you all proud,” Injera concluded in the statement.
