Professional football player Cristiano Ronaldo and his spouse Georgina Rodríguez have announced the sad passing of one of their newborn twins.

In a joint statement, the couple expressed their sadness and pain at losing the male twin, saying it was the greatest pain any parent can't feel.

"It is with our deepest sadness we have to announce that our baby boy has passed away. It is the greatest pain that any parent can feel," the statement read.

The couple said they derive their strength to live with hope and happiness from the birth of the female twin.

"Only the birth of our baby girl gives us the strength to live this moment with some hope and happiness," the statement read.

They thanked the doctors and nurses for all their expertise and support.

They also requested privacy during the time they are dealing with their devastating loss.

"We are all devastated at this loss and we kindly ask for privacy at this very difficult time," they said.

"Our baby boy, you are our angel. We will always love you."

Thousands of Cristiano's fans and fellow football players have sent the family messages of condolence and encouragement.

Cristiano is a Portuguese professional footballer who plays as a forward for the Premier League club Manchester United.

He is also the captain of the Portuguese national team.
