The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) has announced the return of fans to sporting events but put it at two-thirds of the stadium capacity.

FKF made the announcement in a statement dated Saturday, October 23, 2021.

According to the statement, FKF said it received the communication from the Ministry of Health (MoH) and the Ministry of Sports.

“Football Kenya Federation is in receipt of communication from the Ministries of Health and Sports allowing the return of fans for sporting events up to 2/3 of the stadium capacity,” read the statement.

The federation said it welcomed the review of the existing MoH COVID-19 protocols on sporting activities.

FKF also said it will implement the said directives alongside FIFA and CAF COVID-19 containment protocols to avoid sanctions on Kenya by FIFA.

“The federation welcomes the aforementioned review of existing government COVID-19 protocols on sporting activities and will from tomorrow. October 24, 2021, implement the said directive alongside FIFA and CAF COVID-19 protocols, to avoid possible sanctions on Kenya. by world football governing body. FIFA,” the statement partly read.

The federation also said it will continue to seek FIFA and CAF’s approval for local clubs taking part in competitions and national team assignments. It observes the Ministry’s directive and commitment to ensuring a safe sporting environment for players and fans.

Upon the government’s approval of 10,000 fans to attend Sunday’s CAF Confederation Cup match between Gor Mahia and Al Ahly Merowe at Nyayo Stadium, FKF sought CAF’s approval to avoid possible sanctions but until the time of the statement, FKF was yet to receive a response.

Therefore, FKF resorted to having Sunday’s match played behind closed doors and without fans.

“Regrettably, the federation has not received feedback from the African football governing body. as such and in consultation with Gor Mahia FC and Sports Stadia decided that tomorrow's CAF Confederations Cup fixture between Gor Mahia and Al Ahly Merowe will be played behind CLOSED DOORS with NO FANS,” the statement read
