Jack Grealish became the most expensive British footballer ever by completing £100-million move from Aston Villa to Manchester City yesterday.

The 25-year-old underwent his medical tests at the City Football Academy and signed a mammoth six-year contract worth more than £200,000 a week.

Grealish revealed the main reason for leaving his boyhood club was winning major trophies and pleaded with Villa fans to understand his reasons.

'I am over the moon. To come and play for a club like Manchester City is obviously massive for me personally,’ Grealish said.

‘It was obviously a difficult few months because I have been an Aston Villa fan for my whole life, but when I spoke to the manager here and you see what type of players they have got here, in the end it was something I couldn’t say no to. I am absolutely delighted to be here.

‘Trophies are the main reason why I joined. There are obviously a lot of reasons why I decided to come here. The manager has been a massive factor; playing under the best manager in the world was something I couldn’t really turn down.

‘Obviously the players that we have got here, I think everyone knows how much I admire Kevin De Bruyne. It is going to become a dream come true to play alongside him. But competing for major trophies is something that I wanted to do. It was something I couldn’t turn down.’

The former Villa captain will wear the coveted number 10 jersey which was adorned with distinction by City legend Sergio Kun Aguero who joined Barcelona after his deal expired at the end of last season.

City have now broken their transfer record of £62million from last season when they signed Ruben Dias from Benfica and are still in the market for a striker, believed to be Harry Kane from Tottenham.

City will have to break the British record once more since Spurs want £150million for the England captain. They also have to adhere to Financial Fair Play rules and thus, must sell before buying.

So far City have recouped around £50million in player sales and hope to double that in the next fortnight.
