The Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) revoked 75 licenses from various broadcasters across the country in 2024, citing non-compliance with licence conditions.

The revocations, which appeared in the Kenya Gazette between April and November, affected TV broadcasters, FM radio stations, a broadcast signal distributor, and a Subscription Management Service.

"The Authority revoked 75 licenses of various broadcasters in 2024 for non-compliance with license conditions," the authority said.

According to CA, the majority of the revocations, 66 in total, were attributed to non-compliance with the terms and conditions outlined in the broadcasters’ licences.

Nine other cases involved requests from the affected entities themselves to terminate their services.

Among the broadcasters who voluntarily requested licence termination were Econet Media (K) Ltd, Kiss TV, Kwese TV (which holds a Landing Rights Licence), Bamba TV, and Switch TV, among others.

The TV broadcasters whose licences were revoked for non-compliance include Mwariama TV, Miracles TV, Magodo TV, Mugumo TV, Murata TV, Pwani TV, and Sauti TV.

Others on the list are RTN TV, Lamu Youth TV, Madgot TV, Misoft TV, Mitume TV, and Mugwe TV, along with several other regional and community-focused stations such as Elgon TV, Mwanyagetinge TV, and Mt. Kenya TV.

In the radio sector, stations such as Radio Luhya FM, Nacex FM, Somal FM, and Kihooto FM lost their licenses as well. The full list includes numerous other FM stations, highlighting the wide-ranging impact of the enforcement.

The regulatory body’s actions underscore its continued focus on upholding standards within the broadcasting industry, aiming to ensure that broadcasters comply with the required conditions to serve the public effectively.

As the revocations are processed, many of the affected entities will no longer be able to broadcast, which marks a turning point for Kenya’s media landscape in 2024.

This move by the Authority forms part of its broader mandate to safeguard the broadcasting sector’s integrity and ensure compliance with national laws and regulations.
