In a momentous move for Kenya's devolved governance system, President William Ruto has signed into law the County Allocation Revenue Bill, 2023, and the Equalisation Fund Appropriation Bill, 2023.

These bills will play a pivotal role in facilitating the availability of funds to the 47 devolved units, effective from the upcoming financial year.

The County Allocation Revenue Act designates a substantial sum of Sh385.4 billion as shareable revenue among the counties.

This significant allocation aims to support the development and progress of various counties across the nation. Notably, the Nairobi County Government secures the highest allocation of Sh20.07 billion, indicative of its strategic importance as the capital and economic hub of Kenya.

Simultaneously, the Equalisation Fund Act will ensure the allocation of Sh10.3 billion to address the fundamental needs of marginalized areas.

Basic services, including water, roads, electricity, and health, will be improved in these regions, narrowing the gaps in infrastructure and welfare.

This crucial step underscores the government's commitment to achieving equity and inclusivity across all parts of the country.

To mark this momentous occasion, President Ruto presided over the signing ceremony, held at State House in Nairobi last Friday.

A notable ensemble of dignitaries attended the event, including Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, Speaker of the Senate Amason Kingi, Attorney General Justin Muturi, and Senate Majority Leader Aaron Cheruiyot, among others.

This legislative milestone sets the stage for a new fiscal year, fueling optimism and hope for accelerated progress within Kenya's devolved units.
