The Ministry of Labour and Social Protection on Thursday released Sh16.7 billion to pay the more than one million beneficiaries enrolled in Kenya’s Inua Jamii social protection programme.
The objective of Inua Jamii, started during the President Uhuru Kenyatta administration, is to uplift the lives of the poor and vulnerable citizens through regular bi-monthly cash transfers.
Speaking during the release announcement Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua pledged the government’s commitment to continue supporting the most vulnerable members in society.
An extra Sh11.2 million will be disbursed as a top up for beneficiaries under the Nutrition Improvement through Cash and Health Education (NICHE) complimentary programme.
“The funds will be credited to the accounts of 1,072,226 Inua Jamii beneficiaries. Each beneficiary will receive Sh16,000 being payment for four payment cycles,” said Gachagua.

His sentiments on the President William Ruto government pledge to the programme was echoed by Labour and Social Protection CS Florence Bore who was also present at the event.
“My Ministry has continued to implement the consolidated cash transfer programme popularly known as Inua Jamii. This is a flagship project under the Social Pillar of Vision 2030 and a key priority area in the Kenya Kwanza manifesto,” Bore stated.
Frustrated elderly beneficiaries of the cash transfer programme across the country had been lamenting saying they had last received the Sh2,000 per month payment at the beginning of the year.
