Nairobi City County Government has purchased 19 new vehicles that will replace the rickety “kanjo” vehicles in a bid to enhance efficiency and better serve city residents.

Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja says most will be deployed to the security and compliance department and inspectorate to replace infamous old dirty ones known for ferrying arrested hawkers.

Among the other departments in Nairobi City County government that are set to receive the new vehicles include the revenue, health, environment, and social services departments.

“One of the things we promised when we came into office is to address the issue of dilapidated vehicles in the county, we are doing so in phases,” said Sakaja.

He added, “These are tools (vehicles) for serving the people of Nairobi and not to harass. We must treat the people of this city with dignity and utmost respect.”

Speaking at City Hall on Tuesday, he noted that the county witnessed improved revenue collection this year enabling it to acquire the new vehicles and to develop roads in the city.


“We have increased our revenue collection in the first four months by Sh1.5 billion as compared to the same period last year,” stated Sakaja.

Governor Sakaja added that Nairobi County had also partnered with Isuzu Kenya to retrain the county drivers to ensure they are more disciplined in executing their mandates.


“I must commend you Governor for initiating a transformative administration and changing the face of Nairobi County. As Isuzu East Africa, we shall continue partnering with the county and supporting its efforts to deliver quality services for the people of Nairobi,” said Isuzu East Africa Dealers Representative Justus Mathenge.
