Mukami Kimathi, the widow of famed former Mau Mau freedom fighter Dedan Kimathi, is dead.

Mukami’s family has confirmed that she passed away on Thursday night while receiving treatment at a hospital in Nairobi.

According to her daughter Evelyn Wangui Kimathi, the woman who played a key role in Kenya’s independence struggle was rushed to hospital after developing breathing complications.

Her daughter, who lived with her at their Komarock estate, Nairobi home, says she breathed her last shortly after arriving at the hospital and a few tests being conducted by doctors.

Mukami’s body has been transferred to Lee Funeral Home in Nairobi for preservation as funeral plans are made for the woman who is revered as a Mau Mau freedom fighter.

She was among freedom fighters under the Mau Mau rebellion who were incarcerated at the Kamiti Maximum Prison during Kenya's long and violent struggle for independence.

She is remembered for agitating for the State to release the body of her husband, Dedan Kimathi, from Kamiti to allow her to bury him at their Njambini home in Nyandarua County.

Field Marshal Dedan Kimathi was apprehended by the British colonial administration back in 1956 and later controversially executed in 1957 while being detained at Kamiti Prison.

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has led Kenyans in paying tributes Mukami terming her an inspiring figure assuring her family of the government’s support during her burial.

“This is a great loss. She was a symbol of our resilience and our struggle,” said Gachagua.

Mukami Kimathi will also be remembered for fighting for the rights and welfare of Mau Mau fighters.
