The Jubilee Party wars escalated after the clique led by EALA MP Kanini Kega announced it had replaced Party Leader, retired President Uhuru Kenyatta, with nominated MP Sabina Chege.

Addressing the media on Tuesday, the President William Ruto allied MPs led by Kega said that he had made the appointment as the Secretary-General of the former ruling party but in an acting capacity.

He said the decision was based on Section 6(1) of the Presidential Benefits Act, 2003, which bars a retired president from holding any office in a political party for more than six months after leaving power.

Section 6(1) on the Role of a retired President stipulates: A retired President shall not hold office in any political party for more than six months after ceasing to hold office as President.

The Kega team, which has been trying to wrestle the party from Uhuru allies led by former Ndaragwa MP Jeremiah Kioni, said the decision to replace Uhuru with Sabina was made during a National Executive Council (NEC) meeting they conducted on Tuesday morning.

“That the office of the Party Leader of Jubilee Party is thereby declared vacant. That pending the convening of a Special National Delegates Convention, Sabina Chege will be the acting party leader of Jubilee,” said Kega.

The East African Legislative Assembly lawmaker further announced the faction had suspended the National Delegates Convention summoned by Uhuru on May 22, 2023.

In a NEC meeting he called on Friday, Uhuru sacked Jubilee Party Chairman Nelson Dzuya and Executive Director Wambui Gichuru through resignation letters they reportedly signed during their appointment in 2022.

The Ruto allied faction of Jubilee were involved in an ugly confrontation with the Uhuru allies a week ago after the Kega team tried to take over the party headquarters in Nairobi.
