The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) has issued a call for an immediate cessation of hostilities between the warring factions in Sudan.
President William Samoei Ruto participated in a virtual summit of Heads of State, including Presidents Salva Kiir of South Sudan, Yoweri Museveni of Uganda, Ismail Omar Guelleh of Djibouti, and Hassan Sheikh Mohamud of Somalia, to discuss the crisis.
During the summit, Ruto urged the leaders of IGAD to adopt a decisive stance in restoring peace to Khartoum.
The leaders appealed to General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo of the Transitional Sovereign Council to halt the war and return to the negotiating table.
IGAD has resolved to dispatch Presidents Kiir, Ruto, and Guelleh to reconcile the opposing factions at the earliest possible opportunity. The leaders have emphasized that stability in Sudan is critical to the social and economic stability of the region.

They have further stated that the conflict undermines the progress made towards achieving peace over the past four months.
Additionally, the Heads of State requested that both groups establish a secure corridor to allow for humanitarian assistance in Khartoum and other affected areas.
In a statement released on Tuesday, Ruto urged the warring factions to consider the security of the people of Sudan and the stability of the country and the region, especially during the Holy month of Ramadan.
Ruto expressed his concern over the developing crisis in Sudan, calling on all parties to resolve their differences through peaceful means.
He stressed the importance of dialogue and urged the parties to prioritize peaceful negotiations as he warned that the outbreak of violence would only undermine the gains Sudan has made towards lasting peace and prosperity.
“Kenya is concerned about the developing crisis in Sudan. I implore all parties to address any differences through peaceful means for the sake of the security of the people of Sudan and stability in the country and the region, especially during this Holy month of Ramadan. The outbreak of violence will only reverse the gains Sudan has made to the detriment of its lasting peace and prosperity,” Ruto said
“Kenya and the IGAD States are available and ready to contribute to the resolution of this crisis. I am consulting with the regional leadership and other relevant international partners to seek ways to support dialogue and mediation.”
