Robbery suspect narrowly escapes wrath of irate mob at Kehancha hospital

A robbery suspect in Kehancha, Migori County, narrowly escaped death after police officers saved him from an angry mob that was calling for his punishment after he sought refuge at a hospital.

The enraged group accused 45-year-old Daudi Mwita Marwa, who was rumored to be a notorious motorbike robber, of being responsible for the disappearance of some motorbikes in the region.

As the mob was closing in on Marwa, he took advantage of the situation and entered Mother & Child Hospital, hiding inside the hospital's delivery room, much to the surprise of expectant mothers, some of whom were already experiencing labour pains.

The situation at the hospital left the nurses on duty unsure whether to throw the suspect out to the irate mob that was threatening to storm the facility or continue to keep him under siege.

Fortunately, some police officers who were on their routine patrol in the area noticed the commotion and rushed to the scene just before the mob set the facility on fire.

The officers carried out an operation, surpassing the crowd and entering the hospital to enable Marwa to escape through the roof of the hospital in order to avert contact with the mob that was waiting at the entrance.

However, as the police vehicle was leaving the hospital premises, the mob blocked the way and began throwing stones and other projectiles, forcing the police officers to use tear gas to disperse the angry crowd.

The OCS who led the delicate rescue mission sustained an injury to his left ankle, and the police vehicle's windscreen was shattered. The hospital's ambulance was also extensively damaged, and several windowpanes in the hospital's main building were smashed.

Thankfully, there were no injuries reported at the hospital, and the regular activities were able to be continued with police officers remaining to guard the facility. Marwa was taken into police custody for processing before being arraigned.
