The University of Kabianga has been shut down indefinitely as a consequence of the student strike that was initiated over the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) disbursement delay.

According to a memo the Deputy Vice Chancellor in charge of Academics and Student Affairs, Elijah Omwenga issued, the decision to close the institution came after protracted discussion by the Senate.

Therefore, the students were ordered to vacate the institution's premises by 5 p.m.

Before the Senate decided to shut down the school, the students clashed with the police and lit bonfires on the Premier-Taplotin road, rendering it impassable.

It prompted the police to lob tear gas to disperse the protesting students.

They alleged the government’s delay in disbursing HELB funds affected their studies and may also cause them to miss their exams because they have not paid their fees.

The students issued the government with a 48-hour ultimatum to release the funds or face another round of protests.
