An irate group of youth stormed an event and forced the Communications Authority of Kenya Director-General Ezra Chiloba to flee the scene while he was addressing the media.

The rowdy youth on Wednesday forced Chiloba to cut his speech short and abort the event and dash into his vehicle before driving away to safety.

Chiloba was in Kisumu to officiate the high-level World Consumer Rights Day celebrations at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Complex in Kisumu County.

Sources say the rowdy youth who were protesting the high cost of living stormed the catering centre at the event and made off with all the food that the guests and organisers of the event were expected to savour.

The sources also said a section of the protestors were baying for ICT Cabinet Secretary Eliud Owalo who was expected to be the chief guest at the event.

The rowdy youth said they were warming up for the Monday mass action that Azimio, La Umoja One Kenya Coalition leader Raila Odinga called.

However, the youth's behaviour sharply contrasts with Raila’s assertions that the demos were meant to be peaceful and non-violent.

While addressing a political rally on Tuesday in Siaya County, Raila declared Monday a holiday following his deputy principal Martha Karua’s request.

"We do not want any kind of violence or bloodshed. It is going to be peaceful. We are only doing this because it is the only alternative that we have,” Raila said.

Raila declared Monday, a public holiday to allow Kenyans and his supporters to take part in the planned countrywide mass demonstrations against President William Ruto’s administration for failing to lower the cost of living.
