Safaricom has zero-rated mobile data for Uber users in Kenya, enabling drivers, riders, and delivery partners to access the Uber and Uber Eats apps without data charges.

This initiative is designed to enhance app accessibility across the country, with Uber covering all associated data costs, ensuring uninterrupted use for drivers and customers alike.

As part of this partnership, users across both Uber’s ride-hailing and Uber Eats food delivery services will enjoy free data access, a move aimed at addressing data affordability, which has been cited as a key barrier for many Kenyans accessing digital mobility solutions.

An Uber survey highlighted that data access limitations are a primary obstacle, especially for those using options like Uber Boda, Uber’s motorcycle taxi service.

Speaking on the partnership, Imran Manji, Uber’s Head of East Africa, shared insights into the company’s goal to make transportation services accessible for all.

“As a global company that operates locally, it is important to us to understand local nuances of the market we live and operate in," Manji stated.

"Through this partnership with Safaricom, we can help bridge the gap in accessing data for many Kenyans, by which they will be able to access reliable and safe mobility."

"For drivers, this represents savings as they will not need to spend money on mobile data while driving on the Uber app,” he added.

This move comes at a time when Kenya is advancing in internet connectivity, though challenges in rural and peri-urban areas remain.

According to the Kenya National Digital Masterplan 2022-2032, expanding access to ICT services is critical for the country’s economic development.

Uber and Safaricom's initiative aligns with the nation’s digital vision, offering young Kenyans—many of whom face hurdles in obtaining affordable internet—a new way to connect with affordable, reliable transport options.

Safacricom's CEO Peter Ndegwa emphasized the company’s dedication to accessible digital solutions, stating, “This partnership is part of our goal to provide our customers with innovative solutions that allow them to access vital services even when they do not have data bundles or airtime through collaboration with organisations such as Uber to extend free access of their services to customers.”

To benefit from this free data access, users should ensure their devices are free of VPN blockers.

Additionally, both drivers and riders are advised to toggle Airplane Mode on and off before opening the app to access the zero-rated data effectively.

This move is a game-changer and is likely to receive positive feedback from users who sometimes have just enough to hail a cab with nothing extra for data subscription.
