Police have apprehended a motorist who sped off in his private vehicle causing the death of a traffic police officer at Buxton in Mombasa County at around 4:30 pm on Monday.

The suspect, who has been identified as Jama Abdi Osman defied stop orders by the traffic cop, now identified as Constable Julius Marwa, and sped off with him hanging on the door.

In a bizarre episode captured on video, the motorist can be seen speeding off with the cop and drags him away before he falls hard on the tarmac and writhes in pain.

The late traffic officer had been controlling the traffic flow at the Buxton Junction before he ordered the motorist to stop for what police have termed a routine security check leading to the shocking incident.

According to a report filed at the Makupa Police Station under OB Number 64/27/02/2023, Jama was ordered by Marwa to switch off his engine but he allegedly refused and instead sped off endangering the cop's life.

“Abdi was asked by Marwa to turn off the engine to allow the officer to conduct a normal traffic check, but he declined. The action of the driver prompted the officer to open the driver's door with the intent to turn off the ignition, but unexpectedly the driver grabbed the officer's hand and tried to pull him inside the vehicle before driving off at high speed,” said the OB report by the police.

The report added, “The officer sustained serious head injury and multiple fractures on the pelvic. He was rushed to Jocham Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival,” added the report.

The suspect was driving a Toyota Ractis vehicle at the time of the incident that caused the said traffic police officer’s death resulting in a serious police manhunt in Mombasa County.

Police officers managed to track down Jama to a basement parking lot along Beach Road Estate in Nyali area and his vehicle has been towed to Makupa Police Station.

Police have launched an investigation into the incident with the suspect expected to be arraigned and charged over Constable Marwa’s death.

Meanwhile, the body of the fallen police officer has been moved to Jocham Hospital mortuary.
