The embattled Kenya African National Union (KANU) Secretary-General Nick Salat has resigned from his party.

Salat tendered his resignation letter on Friday, in which he expressed the weight of his resignation from the party bears.


He disassociated himself from KANU forthwith, save for those instances when the law would allow him.

"However, and pursuant to Section 14 of the Political Parties Act, I hereby, with a heavy heart but with a clear conscience, tender my resignation from the KANU Party effective the date specified hereunder," Salat's resignation letter read.

"TAKE NOTICE, therefore, that I NICHOLAS SALAT has resigned from KANU Party and therefore disengage from and disassociate myself with the party except in situations where the law so permits after this notice."

In the same letter, Salat accused his party leader Gideon Moi of betrayal and undermining him


Salat maintained that his dismissal from his position as KANU Secretary-General was unlawful.

"It is my position that my purported dismissal from the position of Secretary General as communicated through the press was unlawful and against the rules of natural justice. ,” Salat said.

He also expressed his regrets at the manner in which his resignation came about and claimed he had limited choices.


In December 2022, Moi, on the advice of the KANU National Executive Council, suspended Salat over gross misconduct after the SG made known his intentions to join President William Ruto in his UDA party.

KANU NEC unanimously adopted the report that resolved the ejection of Salat from the position of KANU Secretary-General.
