Detectives arrested four members of a criminal outfit that specialised in breaking into people’s vehicles and stealing their valuables within Nairobi.

The four suspects, identified as Fabian Ochieng Ndubi, Fredrick Wanyingi, Kevin Adote Onyango and Phil Scolten Ail were arrested on Friday last week after they broke into someone’s parked car at Nairobi’s South C Rumi Estate and made off with Sh50,000.

The victim of the gang’s actions reported the matter at the Akiba Police Station, where investigations into the matter were launched immediately.

Footage from a distant CCTV camera provided the breakthrough for the detectives who were handling the case, and once the footage was analysed, the detectives went on a full-swing investigation.

Investigations have since revealed the criminal outfit is organised and usually operates within banking halls, targeting unsuspecting customers who withdraw large amounts of money.

According to the police report, the suspects had marked and trailed their would be last victim from the Nairobi West Equity Bank branch, where he withdrew a lump sum of Sh350,000 that was meant to pay workers at a construction site.

Unbeknownst to him and the bank, one suspect was larking in the banking hall pretending to be opening an account but was busy identifying their potential targets.

Meanwhile, his three accomplices lay waiting inside another vehicle with fake registration plates at the parking for a signal.

Once the victim left the bank, the suspects trailed him all the way to Rumi Estate where the suspect got out of his car and headed to the construction site.

One suspect monitored the victim from a distance while another, armed with a catapult and crushed spark plug went for the driver’s window of his car and shattered.

Luckily, the victim had taken out Sh300,000 from the stash to pay the workers and the suspects only stole the remaining Sh50,000

Forensic analysis by the DCI’s Imaging and Acoustic Unit identified one suspect, who led the investigators to the rest of the gang.

Police also impounded two vehicles the suspects used to trail their victims, from which the police retrieved a catapult and nine spark plugs.

The suspects were arraigned at the Kibera Law Courts, where they pleaded not guilty to three counts of conspiracy to commit a felony, stealing from a locked motor vehicle, and malicious destruction of property.

Police also discovered Ochieng’ and another accomplice have a similar pending case at the same court of stealing Sh600,000 from another vehicle in June 2022 where they apparently presented fake names as Raymond Muramba and Muthui Mutua.

The DCI cautioned members of the public to be more vigilant and appealed to security personnel manning banks to be on the lookout for such gangs who prey on unsuspecting victims.
