Azimio La Umoja One Kenya coalition party leader Raila Odinga has criticised the government over the raid on the Karen home of former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i on Wednesday.

Raila, who visited Matiang’i’s home again, termed the afternoon raid by police officers illegal saying the DCI officers forced entry into the former minister’s home despite failing to secure a court order.

The former Premier accused the President William Ruto administration of turning the country into a police state and the police of damaging the former CS’ property and taking away CCTV footage.

Raila, however, intimated that Matiang’i was not at his home when the raid was executed.

“Dr Matiang'I is being treated like a criminal, last time they denied coming here. They are trying to manufacture evidence to punish someone who has given service to this country,” intimated Raila.

According to Matiang'i's lawyer Danstan Omari, DCI detectives broke the front gate and gained entry to his home then confiscated CCTV footage and hard disks before hurriedly leaving the compound.

“The DCI has acted illegally in enforcing the break-in. If not, he should provide evidence of the order,” Omari said.

He added, “More than seven cars were captured by onlookers gaining access to the home, this time they cannot deny it, we have video evidence of that.”

Omari termed the actions by the uniformed officers unlawful and maintained they were not alerted of the raid and they were never provided with a copy of the court order justifying the afternoon raid.

Last week the government through DCI, National Police Service and Ministry of Interior all denied any involvement in the alleged raid on the former Interior CS’ home as he and his lawyer alleged.

In a statement on Wednesday, DCI boss Mohamed Amin affirmed that his office had obtained a court order permitting his officers to gain entry into Matiang’i’s residence to conduct a search.

“This afternoon our officers obtained a search order to obtain CCTV recordings from the home of the former interior Cabinet Secretary to establish the facts surrounding the alleged raid,” said Amin.

He added, “Upon completing our investigation, we will take action if any officers from any security agency were involved in any unauthorised activities or if any false information was knowingly disseminated by anyone to the public.”
